Saman Dance

suneducationgrup.com

Saman (or the dance of a thousand hands) is one of the most popular dances in Indonesia. Its origin is from the Gayo ethnic group from Gayo Lues, Aceh province, Indonesia, and is normally performed to celebrate important occasions. The dance is characterized by its fast-paced rhythm and common harmony between dancers. These two elements are key figures of Saman, and are among the reasons Saman are widely known and practiced in Indonesia, besides being relatively easy to learn.

On November 24, 2011, UNESCO officially recognized Aceh’s traditional Saman dance as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) named the Saman dance as the best ASEAN cultural preservation effort at the 25th ASEANTA Awards for Excellence 2012.

Form

The dance is done by a group of people without musical instruments. Originally, the group was exclusively male. In performing this dance, the player sings some songs while doing some attractive movements. A short song (which leads to a short dance) can last for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Performance

A typical Saman performance is usually constituted of the following elements: The dancers enter the stage and immediately form a single line while sitting in a form equivalent to the Japanese seiza. The singer then begins to sing, with the lyrics at the beginning commonly telling the general attributes of Gayo culture at medium pace. The dancers then begin to move their hands in a rhythmic manner, following the movements. As the dance progresses, the movements are also performed with arms, head, and the upper body. The pace becomes faster, and the seat positions may change. The key element is that every dancer must move at the same time, creating a homogeneous, continuous, line of movement that is often described as the defining feature of Saman dance. One thing that makes this dance quite unique is that the original Saman dance which comes from Gayo Lues is not accompanied by any musical instruments.

Comment : This traditional dance originating from Aceh is very unique and interesting, the rhythm of the music is melodious and uses traditional Aceh clothes, and the movements are also quite easy to learn. but this dance requires high concentration and compactness between other dancers so that the person who dances it must really have these skills in order to present a beautiful dance for the audience.

Break Dance

topcareer.id

Breaking, also called break dancing or b-boying/b-girling, is an athletic style of street dance from the United States. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, break dancing mainly consists of four kinds of movement: top rock, down rock, power moves and freezes. Break dancing is typically set to songs containing drum breaks, especially in hip-hop, funk, soul music and break beat music, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.

Breaking was created by the African American youth in the early 1970s. The earliest 1st Generation break dancers of Bboys known as Trixie (Lauree Myers), Dancing Doug (Douglas Colon), A1 Bboy Sasa, The Legendary Smith Twins and Clark Kent. The groups included Zulu Kings, Star Child La Rock, Salsoul and Crazy Commandos. By the late seventies, the dance had begun to spread to other communities and was gaining wider popularity; at the same time, the dance had peaked in popularity among African Americans and Puerto Ricans.

A practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Although the term “break dance” is frequently used to refer to the dance in popular culture and in the mainstream entertainment industry, “b-boying” and “breaking” are the original terms and are preferred by the majority of the pioneers and most notable practitioners.

Dance Element

There are four primary elements that form break dancing. They are top rock, down rock, power moves, and freezes.

Top rock generally refers to any string of steps performed from a standing position. It is usually the first and foremost opening display of style, though dancers often transition from other aspects of break dancing to top rock and back. Top rock has a variety of steps which can each be varied according to the dancer’s expression (i.e. aggressive, calm, excited). A great deal of freedom is allowed in the definition of top rock: as long as the dancer maintains cleanliness, form, and attitude, theoretically anything can be top rock. Top rock can draw upon many other dance styles such as popping, locking, tap dance, Lindy hop, or house dance. Transitions from top rock to down rock and power moves are called “drops”.

Down rock (also known as “footwork” or “floor work”) is used to describe any movement on the floor with the hands supporting the dancer as much as the feet. Down rock includes moves such as the foundational 6-step, and its variants such as the 3-step. The most basic of down rock is done entirely on feet and hands but more complex variations can involve the knees when threading limbs through each other.

Power moves are acrobatic moves that require momentum, speed, endurance, strength, flexibility, and control to execute. The breaker is generally supported by his upper body while the rest of his body creates circular momentum. Some examples are the windmill, swipe, back spin, and head spin. Some power moves are borrowed from gymnastics and martial arts. An example of a power move taken from gymnastics is the Thomas Flair which is shortened and spelled flare in b-boying.

Freezes are stylish poses that require the breaker to suspend himself or herself off the ground using upper body strength in poses such as the pike. They are used to emphasize strong beats in the music and often signal the end of a set. Freezes can be linked into chains or “stacks” where breakers go from freeze to freeze to freeze in order to hit the beats of the music which displays musicality and physical strength.

Music

The musical selection for breaking is not restricted to hip-hop music as long as the tempo and beat pattern conditions are met. Breaking can be readily adapted to different music genres with the aid of remixing. The original songs that popularized the dance form borrow significantly from progressive genres of funk, soul, disco, electro, and jazz funk. James Brown, Jimmy Castor Bunch “It’s Just Begun”, and the Incredible Bongo Band “Apache” were used for break dancing. The most common feature of break dance music exists in musical breaks, or compilations formed from samples taken from different songs which are then looped and chained together by the DJ. The tempo generally ranges between 110 and 135 beats per minute with shuffled sixteenth and quarter beats in the percussive pattern. History credits DJ Kool Herc for the invention of this concept later termed the break beat.

Comment : This is a dance that we often see either in person or through electronic media, so that most people are familiar with this dance, but this dance is quite difficult and can only be done by people who really have skills in the art of dancing, generally the dance is performed by men but not a few women who do it. So for those of you who like to dance, you can try this dance or the traditional dance above :).

1. Gundu (Kelereng)

idntimes.com

Kidd’s likelihood now not many know what and how to play this game. The marbles is a clear glass and is usually played by a boy.

The way of playing is also quite easy, just by culming the marbles we have with the target about the opponent marbles. If you hit your opponent’s marble, it will be yours.

This game will be more exciting if played crowded. Now it is rare for children to play this traditional game. So it is rare to see traders selling marbles. Therefore, if still have a marble collection should not be saved, Come on play and teach your siblings!

My opinion: This traditional game is very exciting and interesting especially for men, this game trains aiming movement so that we know the right targets, the game also trains the child’s concentration so it is very good and safe to play.

2. Engklek

lifestyle.kompas.com

This one is one of the traditional games that until now still played almost all over the territory of Indonesia, although in each area has different name however how to play it remains the same.

Engklek can be played by women and men, can be played only two or only five people. Because it should wait to turn to play this, so if too much playing it, the player will get bored because it is waiting too long.

How to play it by drawing the boxes on the floor as in the image by using lime. But It would be more better as if it is played on the field with a flat floor surface, so it’s easy to draw it.

The number of boxes drawn there are nine of three horizontal boxes, connected to three vertical boxes, then add one box above it and two in horizontal.

Each player will take turns passing through the box. The jump must be on one leg, if it falls the player must mark the last square by placing the stone.

My opinion: The game is more commonly played by women but does not mean men can not play it, this game is very cool and exciting, this game also trains our aiming so that the stone thrown does not pass the line, the game is safe to play as entertainment for us.

3. Jump Rope (Lompat Tali)

mynewshub.tv

The rope used to play usually uses rubber connected one by one so it becomes long. After that, the tip of the rubber is tied up and ready you use to play jump rope.

This game is usually played by more than two people and there are two people who will duty hold the rope. But if no one wants to hold the rope, it can be tied to a pole or tree.

The way of playing it, the strap is placed from the bottom and then jump, and so on the rope until it is placed above the head. If you can not jump, it must be repeated again from the bottom level.

My opinion: This game is generally played by women because it is great to train the cohesiveness, the speed and skills of the players, and of course this game is very good and safe to play.

4. Egrang

tokopedia.com

This game is popular in Jakarta area. It is not easy to play the Egrang, only people are quite skilled and are used to maintain the balance which can play it.

Egrang is two long sticks that the middle is given a limit. How to play it by climbing up the foothold on the Egrang, if falling then the player will be given punishment. But, should be careful yes, if not accustomed, should ask for guidance by an expert to prevent the occurrence of accident.

My opinion: This game is to train a person’s balance, and only people who are able to keep the balance that can play this game and danger if we can’t keep the balance of our risk can fall even our feet can be twisted by that this game is more suitable for men.

Synonym and Homonym Of Listening

SYNONYM

What is a Synonym?

A synonym (sin–uh-nim) is a word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word. When words or phrases have the same meaning, we say that they are synonymous of each other. The term synonym comes from a combination of the Ancient Greek syn, meaning with, and onoma, meaning “name.” Synonyms are regular and essential parts of everyday language that we use almost without thinking. They come in all parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and so on. What’s more, synonyms are so important that there is a whole reference work dedicated to them, called a thesaurus—it’s a dictionary of synonyms!

Examples :

Here are some synonyms of words you use every day:

Bad: awful, terrible, horrible

Good: fine, excellent, great

Hot: burning, fiery, boiling

Cold: chilly, freezing, frosty

Easy: Simple, effortless, straightforward

Hard: difficult, challenging, tough

Big: large, huge, giant

Small: tiny, little, mini

Now, read the three sentences below:

The small child was quickly eating a cold ice cream cone, which gave him a bad headache.

The little kid was rapidly gobbling a frosty ice cream cone, which gave him an awful headache.

The youngster was speedily consuming a freezing ice cream cone, which gave him a terrible headache.

As you can see, the three sentences above share the same situation, but, Sentences 2 and 3 paint a better picture because they use synonyms for some of the dull words in Sentence 1. Words like “rapidly,” “gobbling,” “awful,” and “terrible” are much more descriptive than “quickly,” “eating,” and “bad”—they have the same meanings as Sentence 1, but stronger connotations.

Types of Synonyms

Synonyms exist as parts of speech. Here are some examples:

Verbs

Teach, instruct, educate

Seek, search, look for

Nouns

Teacher, instructor, educator

Test, exam, assessment

Adjective

Smart, intelligent, clever

Dumb, stupid, slow

Adverb

Very, really, extremely

Quietly, silently, without a sound

Importance of Synonyms

Since word choice is everything in language (probably the most crucial part!), the importance of synonyms is beyond measure. Synonyms make language more interesting, more meaningful, and more relevant. They have a huge, central role in word choice for both prose and poetry. In fact, you could argue that poetry wouldn’t even exist without synonyms—one of the main reasons we use them is to be descriptive, creative, and expressive, and poetry relies on those three things. Imagine what writing, reading, and speaking would be like if there were only one word for everything! Language would be boring, and would have no room for creativity.

The way words are chosen and used is often what defines a piece of literature; so, synonyms allow all authors to develop their own styles and voices when creating their works. Another main reason we use synonyms is because words often share the same meanings but have different connotations (a word’s implied meaning). For example, you might say “the soup’s aroma was in the air,” which makes it sound delicious, but “the soup’s odor was in the air” makes it sound terrible. So, an author chooses a synonym based on its positive, negative, or neutral connotation. This helps writers say what they mean, and how they mean it.

Examples of Synonyms in Literature

As mentioned, poetry probably wouldn’t exist without synonyms. In the poem “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” William Wordsworth describes an afternoon walk that was particularly special for him. In the selection below, he uses synonyms to help his readers imagine the scene that he saw:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Here, Wordsworth uses the synonyms “crowd” and “host” to express that he saw a large number of daffodils, which made them much more magnificent. It’s a technique he is using to emphasize the beauty of his experience. By using two different words with the same meaning, he is able to paint a better picture with his words.

Homonyms can refer to both homophones and homographs.

A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning and is spelled differently.

My Experience in University

Hi, My name is Nurul aini you can call me nurul or anything polite.

I’m currently studying at the University of Singaperbangsa Karawang during the 2nd semester of English Education Department. Haven’t completed 1 year I’ve been here but I’ve had a lot experience, from living in a boarding house to sitting in college.

The most memorable experience that we can’t forget is a period of introduction to new college student life. When we started go to university at 4 a.m to 7 p.m for 4day. We fidgeted in the wrong way with the right tools, but it was fun that we thought his senior were stern hehe.

It’s not like I’m finally going to be able to sit in college now until 4years later inshaallah, Thanks to prayer and the support of my parents, my goal was to make them happy and Thanks for reading my experience, see you in the next story.😁
